Autumn Reset: How to Grow Snap Peas (Even If You’re New to Gardening)
As the seasons shift, it’s the perfect moment to plant cool-season crops — and snap peas are the standout. They’re fast, forgiving and genuinely fun to grow. Ideal with kids or grandkids, or just as a low-effort win for yourself.
There’s also something deeply satisfying about harvesting a handful of peas and tossing them straight into dinner. No middle steps. No fuss.
Best part? Snap peas thrive in pots.
Seeds or Seedlings — What’s Better?
Go with seeds.
Peas have delicate roots that don’t love being disturbed, so direct sowing gives you stronger, happier plants from the start.
The Right Pot
Snap peas have shallow root systems, so think wide rather than deep.
Trough planters are perfect — they give plenty of room to spread and are easy to manage (and yes, we usually have them in stock at The Nurso).
Potting Mix & Mulch
Use a premium potting mix that balances drainage with moisture retention.
Top it off with sugar-cane mulch (or similar) to keep soil cool and prevent it from drying out too quickly — especially important as seedlings establish.
Keeping Peas Upright
Snap peas come as climbing or bush varieties, but even bush types benefit from support.
A small arch, frame or trellis improves airflow, keeps plants tidy and helps prevent disease. Plus, harvesting is way easier.
Where to Place Your Pot
Snap peas love light.
Choose a spot with:
-
6+ hours of sun per day
-
Good airflow
Balconies, patios and sunny garden edges work beautifully.
Watering Basics
Pots dry out faster than garden beds, so keep soil consistently moist — not wet.
This matters most early on. Overwatering young seedlings can cause rot, so check the soil before you water.
When Can You Harvest?
Around 15 weeks after sowing, you’ll be picking your first peas.
The magic? The more you harvest, the more they produce. Pick, eat, repeat.
