Easy-to-Grow Veggies That Taste Amazing
A Brisbane Guide to Leafy Greens
If you’re looking for a quick win in the veggie patch, leafy greens are it. Fast-growing, generous and endlessly useful in the kitchen, they’re the kind of plants that make gardening feel instantly rewarding.
And the best part? Brisbane’s winter is peak leafy-green season.
Get Ready to Green Up Your Veggie Patch 🌿
All leafy greens really need are sunshine and regular water — and Brisbane delivers both beautifully through the cooler months. They grow quickly, bounce back after harvesting, and will be feeding the whole household before you know it.
New to gardening or getting the kids involved? Leafy greens are forgiving, fun, and perfect for learning as you go.
Why Winter Is the Sweet Spot in Brisbane
In Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate, winter offers mild days, plenty of sun and far less heat stress than summer. While other climates slow down in winter, ours is the ideal growing window for spinach, silverbeet and chard.
Plant now, enjoy steady growth, and harvest right through the season.
Ready-to-Plant Seeds Available at The Nurso
To give you a head start, The Nurso stocks Erica Vale seeds, ready to plant straight into your veggie patch or pots.
Leafy greens aren’t just delicious — they’re also packed with vitamins A and K, making them as nourishing as they are versatile. We recommend planting now, before summer heat arrives.
What to Grow (And Why We Love Them)
Silverbeet & Rainbow Chard
Bold, colourful and endlessly productive.
These pick-and-come-again plants let you harvest the outer leaves as needed while the centre keeps producing. Cut close to the base and they’ll keep going — and going.
They’re also surprisingly ornamental, adding colour and structure to your veggie patch.
Spinach
Compact, fast and easy.
Spinach has smaller leaves than chard but is just as simple to grow. It loves sun, so give it a bright spot. One tip: don’t plant spinach near potatoes, as they compete for the same nutrients.
What to Do With All Those Greens?
Once your patch takes off, you’ll have plenty to play with.
Salads, pestos, sautés — or our favourite winter comfort food…
A Simple Spinach Pie Everyone Loves 🥧
Leafy greens shine in warm, comforting dishes. Spinach, silverbeet and rainbow chard can all be used interchangeably in pies and bakes.
We love a classic spinach pie for chilly evenings — especially when herbs like oregano and parsley are picked straight from the garden. (Good news: they also thrive in Brisbane winters and grow happily in pots.)
Close the Loop: Compost Your Veggie Scraps
While you’re at The Nurso, pop past our consignment space (the covered area next to the café). You’ll find Composta — an Australian-made worm farm and composting system that turns kitchen scraps back into nutrient-rich soil.
It’s gardening at its best:
Veggie scraps → compost → healthy soil → new seedlings → dinner again.
Whether you’re starting your first veggie patch or levelling up what you already have, The Nurso’s friendly horticultural team is here to help — seven days a week.
Pop in, chat leafy greens, and let’s get your winter garden thriving.
