Allagoptera caudescens (Buri Palm)

Allagoptera caudescens, commonly known as Buri Palm, is a slow-growing tropical palm native to Brazil. It is valued for its elegant, solitary trunk, dark green leaflets, and attractive silvery undersides. In suitable climates, it develops into a tall specimen palm with a refined, tropical appearance.

The palm naturally occurs in sandy soils and coastal forest environments, making it suitable for warm, well-drained garden settings. It is generally slow growing and performs best in warm climates with protection from cold.

Key Features

Allagoptera caudescens is valued for its graceful foliage and unusual leaf contrast, with green upper surfaces and pale silvery undersides. It is suitable as a feature palm in tropical, subtropical, and sheltered warm-temperate gardens.

Unlike many palms, it often performs well in bright filtered light or partial shade, particularly when young. Mature specimens can tolerate stronger light if acclimatised and kept adequately watered.

Growth Habit and Size

This species grows as a solitary palm with an upright trunk and a rounded crown of arching fronds.

It can eventually reach 10 to 15 metres in suitable outdoor conditions, though growth is slow and container-grown plants remain much smaller for many years.

Care Requirements

Light

Prefers bright filtered light to partial sun. It can tolerate full sun in warm humid climates when established, but harsh exposure may cause leaf burn, especially in young plants.

Watering

Water regularly during establishment and active growth. Once established, it has some drought tolerance, but performs best with consistent moisture and good drainage. Allow the upper soil layer to dry slightly between watering.

Soil

Prefers sandy, well-draining soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, as good drainage is essential for healthy root development.

Temperature and Climate

Best suited to tropical, subtropical, and warm coastal climates. It is cold sensitive and should be protected from frost and prolonged cold conditions.

Maintenance

Low to moderate maintenance. Remove old or damaged fronds as required.

Fertilise during the growing season with a palm-appropriate fertiliser to support steady growth.

Avoid planting too deeply. This species may develop a heel-like root structure, so the upper section should not be buried.

Common Issues

Slow growth is normal for this species.

Leaf burn may occur in harsh full sun or dry exposed positions.

Root problems may develop in poorly drained soil.

Cold damage can occur in frost-prone areas.

Applications

Allagoptera caudescens is suitable for:

Feature palm planting
Tropical and subtropical gardens
Sheltered courtyards
Large containers while young
Coastal-style landscapes
Collector palm gardens

Its foliage contrast and refined form make it especially effective as a specimen palm.
