Alocasia wentii (Elephant Ear)

Alocasia wentii is a tropical foliage plant valued for its large, dramatic leaves and strong architectural presence. It is commonly grown as both an indoor feature plant and an outdoor specimen in warm, sheltered gardens.

The plant produces broad, arrow-shaped leaves with deep green upper surfaces and contrasting bronze to purple undersides. The foliage is held on upright stems, creating a bold, layered appearance that adds depth and texture to planting schemes.

Key Features

Alocasia wentii is known for its striking foliage contrast, with dark green tops and rich, coloured undersides.

It has a more tolerant nature compared to many other Alocasia varieties, making it easier to grow in a range of conditions.

Its large leaves and upright form make it an effective statement plant.

Growth Habit and Size

This variety grows as a clumping plant with upright stems emerging from a rhizomatous base.

It typically reaches 1 to 1.5 metres in height, with a spread of approximately 0.8 to 1.2 metres. Growth rate is moderate.

Care Requirements

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Water regularly, allowing slight drying between watering.

Soil

Prefers well-draining, rich soil with good organic content.

Temperature and Humidity

Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 30°C.

Prefers moderate to high humidity and benefits from a humid environment.

Maintenance

Moderate maintenance. Remove older or damaged leaves to maintain appearance.

Fertilise during the growing season to support strong foliage growth.

Repot or divide as needed when the plant becomes crowded.

Common Issues

Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering or poor drainage.

Brown edges can result from low humidity or inconsistent watering.

Sensitive to cold temperatures and frost.

Pests such as spider mites may occasionally occur.

Applications

Alocasia wentii is suitable for:

Tropical garden planting
Shaded patios and courtyards
