Calathea rufibarba (Furry Feather Calathea)

Calathea rufibarba is a distinctive tropical foliage plant admired for its long, elegant leaves and soft, velvety texture. Unlike many calatheas that are known for bold leaf patterns, Calathea rufibarba stands out through its graceful form, rich green foliage, and burgundy-purple undersides.

The leaves are narrow and gently arching, creating a flowing, fountain-like appearance. Fine hairs cover the undersides of the leaves and stems, giving the plant a soft texture and earning it the common name "Furry Feather Calathea." Its refined appearance makes it an excellent choice for contemporary interiors and tropical plant displays.

Key Features

Calathea rufibarba is valued for its unique leaf texture, elegant growth habit, and rich foliage colour. The contrast between the deep green upper leaf surface and the burgundy undersides provides visual interest from every angle.

Its softer appearance allows it to complement both structural foliage plants and flowering specimens. The plant maintains year-round ornamental appeal and brings a lush tropical feel to indoor spaces.

Growth Habit and Size

This plant grows as a dense clump with long, arching leaves emerging from the base.

Indoors, Calathea rufibarba typically reaches 60–90 cm in height and 50–80 cm in width. Growth is moderate under warm, humid conditions with consistent care.

Care Requirements

Light

Prefers medium to bright indirect light. It tolerates lower light conditions but performs best where it receives filtered natural light.

Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the foliage and cause leaf fading.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry slightly.

Allowing the plant to dry out completely can lead to leaf curling and browning.

Soil

Requires a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix rich in organic matter. A blend containing coco peat, compost, and perlite is ideal.

Temperature and Humidity

Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 28°C.

High humidity is preferred and helps maintain healthy foliage. Dry indoor air may cause browning leaf edges and reduced leaf quality.

Maintenance

Remove damaged or ageing leaves as required to maintain a neat appearance.

Clean around the plant regularly, although the velvety leaves should not be polished or excessively wiped as this may damage the fine hairs.

Feed lightly during spring and summer using a balanced liquid fertiliser.

Repot every 1–2 years when the plant becomes crowded.

Common Issues

Brown leaf tips are commonly caused by low humidity, inconsistent watering, or mineral buildup in water.

Leaf curling may indicate underwatering, dry air, or temperature stress.

Yellow leaves are often associated with overwatering or poor drainage.

Spider mites may occasionally appear in dry conditions.

Applications

Calathea rufibarba is suitable for:

Indoor decorative pots
Living rooms and offices
Bedrooms and shaded interiors
Tropical-themed plant collections
Bathrooms with natural light
Commercial plant displays

Its elegant foliage adds movement and texture to interior plant arrangements.
