Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia bifurcata)

Foxtail Palm is a highly ornamental tropical palm valued for its smooth trunk, fast growth, and distinctive bushy fronds that resemble a fox’s tail. Native to Queensland, Australia, it is one of the most popular landscape palms for modern tropical and subtropical gardens.

The palm develops a solitary grey trunk topped with large feather-like fronds that radiate outward in a full, plumed form. The foliage is bright green and densely arranged, giving the canopy a soft and symmetrical appearance.

Its clean structure and rapid growth make it widely used in residential, commercial, and resort-style landscaping.

Key Features

Foxtail Palm is prized for its attractive foliage and self-cleaning growth habit, meaning old fronds naturally drop as the plant matures.

It adapts well to a range of conditions and performs strongly in warm coastal and subtropical climates. Its symmetrical crown and smooth trunk provide a refined tropical look suitable for both formal and relaxed landscapes.

The palm also produces clusters of decorative orange to red fruit beneath the crown.

Growth Habit and Size

This species grows as a solitary upright palm with a clean grey trunk and dense crown.

It typically reaches 8 to 12 metres in height, with a canopy spread of approximately 3 to 4 metres. Growth rate is moderate to fast under warm conditions.

Care Requirements

Light

Performs best in full sun. Full sun promotes strong growth and a dense crown.

Young plants tolerate light shade during establishment.

Watering

Requires regular watering during establishment. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant but performs best with occasional deep watering during dry periods.

Soil

Prefers well-draining soil and adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy soils.

Temperature and Climate

Best suited to tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate climates.

Tolerates heat, humidity, and coastal exposure. Mature plants tolerate light frost but young palms should be protected from cold.

Maintenance

Low maintenance. The palm is self-cleaning, with old fronds naturally shedding.

Fertilise regularly with a quality palm fertiliser to maintain healthy foliage colour and growth.

Mulching helps retain moisture and improve root health.

Common Issues

Nutrient deficiencies may cause yellowing or discoloured fronds.

Poor drainage can lead to root problems.

Cold damage may occur in frost-prone climates.

Scale insects may occasionally affect stressed plants.

Applications

Foxtail Palm is suitable for:

Feature palm planting
Poolside landscapes
Resort-style gardens
Avenue planting
Coastal landscapes
Commercial and residential projects

Its symmetrical form and fast growth make it one of the most widely used ornamental palms.
