Michelia ‘Coco’ (Magnolia)

Michelia ‘Coco’ is a compact, evergreen flowering shrub from the Fairy Magnolia® series, valued for its richly fragrant blooms and dense, glossy foliage. It is well suited to hedging, screening, and feature planting where both structure and fragrance are desired.

The plant produces small, deep green leaves that form a tight, uniform canopy. From late winter through spring, and often intermittently throughout the year, it bears masses of creamy-white flowers flushed with soft pink to burgundy tones. The flowers release a strong, sweet fragrance, making it ideal for planting near pathways and outdoor living areas.

Key Features

‘Coco’ is known for its compact growth and prolific flowering, offering both visual and sensory appeal. The darker-toned buds and flushed flowers provide a subtle contrast compared to lighter varieties.

Its dense foliage allows it to function effectively as a hedge or screen, while its manageable size makes it suitable for smaller gardens and containers.

The extended flowering period ensures long-lasting seasonal interest.

Growth Habit and Size

This variety forms a dense, upright shrub with a naturally compact structure.

It typically reaches 2 to 3 metres in height, with a spread of approximately 1 to 2 metres. It can be maintained smaller with pruning.

Growth rate is moderate.

Care Requirements

Light

Performs best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes stronger flowering and denser growth.

Watering

Requires regular watering during establishment. Once established, it prefers consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out completely.

Water approximately 1–2 times per week depending on conditions.

Soil

Prefers well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Slightly acidic soil is ideal.

Temperature and Climate

Suitable for temperate to subtropical climates. It tolerates humidity and light frost once established but should be protected from heavy frost.

Maintenance

Low maintenance. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages denser growth.

Fertilise during the growing season to support flowering and foliage health.

Mulching helps retain soil moisture and improve soil structure.

Common Issues

Generally hardy with few issues.

Yellowing leaves may indicate poor drainage or nutrient imbalance.

Reduced flowering may occur in low light.

Leaf burn can occur in harsh, exposed conditions.

Applications

Michelia ‘Coco’ is suitable for:

Feature planting
Fragrant gardens
Courtyards and small spaces
Container planting
