Zamia furfuracea (Cardboard Palm)

Zamia furfuracea, commonly known as Cardboard Palm, is a distinctive cycad valued for its thick, textured foliage, compact growth habit, and exceptional durability. Despite its common name, Cardboard Palm is not a true palm but a member of the ancient cycad family, a group of plants that predates flowering plants and has remained largely unchanged for millions of years.

Native to the eastern coast of Mexico, Zamia furfuracea is widely used in tropical, coastal, and low-maintenance landscapes due to its tolerance of heat, drought, wind, and poor soils. Its stiff, leathery leaves have a unique texture resembling cardboard, giving the plant its common name.

With its symmetrical form and architectural appearance, Cardboard Palm is equally suited to gardens, courtyards, commercial landscapes, and decorative containers.

Key Features

Unique thick, textured foliage

Compact and symmetrical growth habit

Extremely drought tolerant once established

Excellent feature plant for gardens and containers

Suitable for coastal and subtropical landscapes

Low-maintenance and long-lived

Strong architectural appearance

Highly resilient and adaptable

Growth Habit and Size

Cardboard Palm grows from a thick underground trunk, producing dense rosettes of stiff, feather-like leaves.

Mature plants typically reach between 60cm and 1.2 metres in height and 1 to 1.5 metres in width.

Growth is slow to moderate, with new foliage emerging in seasonal flushes.

Its compact size makes it suitable for smaller gardens, pathways, courtyards, and large pots.

Care Requirements

Light

Performs best in full sun to part shade.

Plants grown in full sun typically develop a more compact growth habit, while partial shade may produce larger foliage.

Watering

Water regularly during establishment.

Once established, Cardboard Palm is highly drought tolerant and requires minimal supplemental watering.

Allow the soil to dry between watering.

Soil

Requires well-draining soil.

Performs well in sandy, loamy, and rocky soils provided drainage is adequate.

Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Temperature and Humidity

Thrives in warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical climates.

Tolerates heat, humidity, wind, and coastal conditions.

Established plants can tolerate light frost and short periods of cooler weather.

Maintenance

Minimal maintenance is required.

Remove damaged or ageing leaves as needed.

Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for cycads during spring and summer.

Repot container-grown plants only when necessary due to their slow growth rate.

Offsets may be removed and propagated when mature.

Common Issues

Yellow Leaves

May indicate nutrient deficiencies, particularly manganese or magnesium.

Root Rot

Usually caused by poor drainage or excessive watering.

Slow Growth

Natural for the species and generally not a cause for concern.

Frost Damage

Young foliage may be damaged by severe frost.

Scale Insects

Occasionally affect leaves and stems, particularly in sheltered locations.

Applications

Suitable for:

Feature planting

Coastal gardens

Courtyard gardens

Commercial landscapes

Poolside planting

Rock gardens

Container displays

Low-maintenance gardens

Subtropical landscapes

Its bold form and durability make it an excellent choice for architectural and tropical-inspired designs.
