Ficus pumila (Creeping Fig)

Ficus pumila, commonly known as Creeping Fig, is a fast-growing, evergreen climber valued for its dense, clinging growth and ability to cover vertical and horizontal surfaces. It is widely used for walls, fences, groundcover, and decorative planting.

The plant produces small, heart-shaped leaves in bright green tones that form a tight, overlapping layer. When young, the foliage is fine and compact, creating a smooth, uniform surface. As it matures, leaves may become larger and more spaced, especially if allowed to climb freely.

Key Features

Creeping Fig is known for its strong clinging ability, attaching to surfaces using aerial roots.

It creates a dense, living “green wall” effect and can quickly cover large areas.

It is highly versatile, functioning as a climber, groundcover, or trailing plant.

Growth Habit and Size

This plant grows as a vigorous climber or spreading groundcover.

It can reach 10 metres or more in height when climbing, though it can be kept smaller with pruning. Growth rate is fast.

Care Requirements

Light

Performs best in full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate shade but may grow less densely.

Watering

Requires regular watering during establishment. Once established, it prefers moderate watering.

Allow soil to dry slightly between watering.

Soil

Prefers well-draining soil and is adaptable to a wide range of soil types.

Temperature and Climate

Suitable for warm temperate to subtropical climates. It tolerates heat and humidity but is sensitive to frost.

Maintenance

Moderate to high maintenance depending on use. Regular pruning is required to control growth and maintain shape.

It can be trimmed heavily and will regenerate quickly.

Fertilise occasionally to support growth if needed.

Common Issues

Can become invasive if not controlled.

May damage painted or delicate surfaces due to clinging habit.

Leaf drop may occur under stress or environmental changes.

Pests such as scale or mealybugs may occasionally appear.

Applications

Ficus pumila is suitable for:

Wall and fence coverage
Groundcover
Green walls and vertical gardens
Topiary and shaping
Hanging baskets
Courtyards and urban spaces

Its dense growth makes it ideal for covering surfaces quickly.
