Michelia ‘Fairy Cream’ (Magnolia)

Michelia ‘Fairy Cream’ is a compact, evergreen flowering shrub or small tree valued for its highly fragrant, creamy-white flowers and dense, glossy foliage. Part of the Fairy Magnolia® series, it is well suited to hedging, screening, and feature planting in residential and commercial landscapes.

The plant produces small, deep green leaves that form a dense, uniform canopy. From late winter through spring, and often intermittently throughout the year, it displays masses of creamy-white, cup-shaped flowers with a strong, sweet fragrance.

Key Features

‘Fairy Cream’ is known for its prolific flowering and compact growth habit, making it ideal for smaller gardens and structured planting.

Its extended flowering period provides ongoing interest, while the fragrant blooms make it suitable for planting near walkways, entrances, or outdoor living areas.

The dense foliage allows it to function effectively as a hedge or screen.

Growth Habit and Size

This variety grows as a compact, upright shrub with dense branching.

It typically reaches 2 to 4 metres in height, with a spread of approximately 1.5 to 2.5 metres. It can be maintained smaller with pruning.

Growth rate is moderate to fast under favourable conditions.

Care Requirements

Light

Performs best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages stronger flowering and denser growth.

Watering

Requires regular watering during establishment. Once established, it prefers consistent moisture but can tolerate short dry periods.

Water approximately 1–2 times per week depending on conditions.

Soil

Prefers well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Slightly acidic conditions are ideal.

Temperature and Climate

Suitable for temperate to subtropical climates. It tolerates humidity and light frost once established, though protection from heavy frost is beneficial.

Maintenance

Low maintenance. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage denser growth.

Fertilise during the growing season to support flowering and overall health.

Mulching helps retain soil moisture and improve soil structure.

Common Issues

Generally hardy with few problems.

Yellowing leaves may indicate poor drainage or nutrient deficiency.

Reduced flowering may occur in low light conditions.

Leaf burn can occur in harsh, exposed conditions.

Applications

Michelia ‘Fairy Cream’ is suitable for:

Hedging and screening
Feature planting
Fragrant garden design
Courtyards and small gardens
Formal landscape design
Container planting

Its fragrance and compact form make it highly versatile.
